Fawn Over Me
Timm June 8th, 2009
We had the pleasant surprise of finding the cutest small fawn in the field below Jimmy Pond.
Actually, it was our dog Darby who found the fawn. Darby was barking in the brush with that “Come check it out, I’ve got something trapped” bark. When we arrived, Darby was nose-to-nose with the fawn, which was about the same size as Darby but still quite clumsy on its feet.
Darby is usually a sweet dog to other animals, but not if they put up a chase. Fortunately this fawn stood still and waited to see what Darby would do. We cautioned Darby to be nice, and all she did was swat the fawn’s nose once with her paw trying to get it to play with her. The fawn just stared at Darby with a puzzled look.
Check out the cute mottled fur on this fawn. You can also see a wad of spit on the side of her mouth and some ticks stuck in her ear.
Fawns rely on these spots to help camouflage them in the brush. But the spots offer little defense against Darby’s super beagle nose.
Here’s a short video of the fawn slowly walking away to rejoin its mom and sibling across the field.

Uncle Timm and Aunt Theresa,
Grammy and I want to come visit you and play with all the neat animals and Darby!!
Love,
Ryan
Oh, how sweet! We see fawns here but I haven’t seen one that young!
